Feb 20, 2010 Nursery Event (Today turned out bright, sunny and dry with 96 volunteers at our nursery each spending 2.5 hours performing various tasks. Among these tasks include: 1) upsizing 236 5-gallon shrubs and trees into 15-gallon containers (including staking, installing irrigation lines, and placement into rows); 2) upsizing 1,200 rooted cuttings into one gallon containers and organized them on the cutting tables; 3) weeded; 4) staked; and 5) raked. As a special project, five volunteers tagged existing inventory for the MWRP Phase II landscape material with our new weatherproof identification tags. )
Jan 16, 2010 Shadetree nursery - January nursery event (We had a terrific event with 71 volunteers! Tasks accomplished included: upsizing 136 trees donated from the Cemetery District into 15 gallon containers; upsized 150 4" Sambucus shrubs into 5 gallon containers; converted two riparian beds into Myporum (groundcover) and Acacia (shrubs) for a source of cuttings while keeping two beds for riparian bullrush; planted hundreds of acorns into flats for future coastal live oak trees; installed irrigation infrastructure for future MWRP phase II inventory; raked leaves and cleaned rows; populated the UCI grow-out area per their planting palette with infrastructure; installed plastic sheeting on the new cutting tables and populated the area with plants; and weeded rows. All in all, an impressive event. )

Nov 21, 2009 Shadetree Partnership Nursery - November Nursery Event (Shadetree had a terrific event today with 150 volunteers. Staff included Mary Aileen Matheis, Tom and Leslie Bonkowski, Matt Rayl, Kay Phillies, Dale Skidmore, Dave Asman, Steve Tolerico and Mark Stone. The volunteers performed the following tasks: 1,500 2" to 4" seedlings were upsized into one gallon containers and placed into the two greenhouses (which are now 100% full); 1,000 Myporum cuttings were upsized into 10 flats (i.e. 100 per flat); eights flats of Legustrum were upsized into one gallon containers and were placed into the greenhouses; seven volunteers trimmed and raked the southwest corner of the nursery in preparation for planting material for the MWRP Phase II growing area; another crew of five cleaned out rows 9 and 10 for the UCI growing station; Matt Rayl lead a group to upsize 50 24" box Coastal Live Oak trees; other volunteers weeded, raked, pruned, and staked trees in the nursery. All in all, great effort by all volunteers and staff! )
Sep 12, 2009 Nusery event - (Today was another very successful Shadetree event! We had 42 volunteers perfom the following tasks: Upsized and staked 250 one/gallon trees into 15 gallon containers, upsized and staked 25 15/gallon oak trees into 24" box trees, propogated 25 flats of Myoporum groundcover, cleaned and arranged both sections of cutting tables, filled one 40 yard trash container with nursery debris, weeded five isles of trees, rakes three isles of trees. Additionally, there were 9 adopt-a-row participants from Irvine Valley College who worked on their row. This group is interested in attending our next Shadetree Board meeting to give an overview of their experiences and work in this program. )
Aug 08, 2009 Nursery Event - 8th Annual Hot August Event (A total of 68 volunteers performed the following tasks: planted 230 one gallon trees into 15 gallon containers, propogated 80 flats of groundcover,staked trees and hand watered all of the new transplants. )
Jul 18, 2009 Shadetree Partnership Nursery - Summer Service Corps with Senator Lou Correa (Shadetree had an event with Senator Lou Correa and the summer service corps. volunteer group. A total of 71 volunteers attended, including Tom and Leslie Bonkowski, Matt Rayl, Dave Lochridge, Kay Phillies, Dale Skidmore, Dave Asman and Steve Tolerico. The event went very smoothly with the Senator mixing with all of the volunteers, and staying through the barbecue where he presented Tom Bonkowski (and the Shadetree Partnership) a Senate Certificate of Recognition plaque honoring our commitment in bringing environmental awareness and active participation to the community, The following tasks were performed: Upsized 36-15 gallon trees into 24" boxes for MWRP, Phase II project; upsized 200-one gallon Potocarpus trees into 15-gallon containers (and moved and installed irrigation into row 13); upsized 100-one gallon Carolina Cherry trees into 15-gallon containers (and moved and installed irrigation into row 15); propagated 20 flats of Myoporum ground cover; upsized 20 flats (i.e. 1,000) Myoporum into one gallon containers; weeded various rows in the nursery; and pruned one row of Crepe Myrtle from multi-trunk into single trunk. )

Jun 20, 2009 Nursery Event - Volunteer Effort (A total of 90 volunteers performed the following tasks: Upsized, staked and tied 61 15-gallon Tristania trees into 24" boxes; upsized, staked and tied 73 one-gallon Crepe Myrtle trees into 15 gallon containers; upsized, staked and tied 84 one-gallon Western Redbud trees into 15 gallon containers; upsized, staked and tied 15 one-gallon Coastal Live Oak trees into 15 gallon containers; upsized, staked and tied 12 one-gallon Toyon bushes into 15 gallon containers; rooted 181 Myoporum groundcover into one gallon (on the cutting tables); and rooted 54 flats of Myoporum groundcover (96 plants in each flat) in the first greenhouse)
